Ambition is the decision one makes and the resolution with which he carries out that decision. It provides us with the required driving force to accomplish any undertakings in our life. Just as Joseph Epstein, a famous American writer put it, “And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed.” Indeed, once we make up our minds to choose to do something, then our life becomes meaningful and specifically orientated. This notion of life, as far as I observe, is closest to truth and does apply to almost all aspects of life.
First things first, ambition renders us a sense of mission. No matter what decision you make you have to be responsible for your choice. Your choice procures you a sense of orientation, or more specially a sense of mission. And only a strong mission may enable one to accomplish greatness. Caesar of the ancient Roman Empire was urged by his ambition “I came, I saw, I conquered.” And became an unrivaled empire builder in the history of Rome. John Milton, stimulated always by his ambition that aimed at writing some “mighty lines” which England would unwillingly forget, had in due time secured his position as the second Shakespeare in the history of English literature.
In the second place, ambition can bring one’s potentials to the full. Ambition may well serve as a catalyst activating one’s dormant potentials. Without ambition one’s potentials will remain slumbering like a dormant volcano. A case in point is Ms Zhang Haidi, a Chinese Helen Keller. It was her ambition to be a useful person has turned the almost paralyzed Zhang Haidi into a well-accomplished figure whose achievements would dwarf those of some normal people aim at the sun, though, at worst, they may probably land on the moon.
Influential as it is upon us, however, ambition must be channeled in the right direction. If wrongly directed, one’s ambition may bring havoc on him and others. Hitler, whose ambition was to conquer Europe by whatever evil means, finally turned him into a demon. It was this demon that almost cast Europe into an unfathomable abyss of anguish and suffering. Another case is Macbeth whose ambition was to become the king of Scotland. However, his ambition was materialized by the murder of King Duncan. Consequently, unbearable guilt and psychological agony drove him to his tragic doom.
To sum up, ambition can benefit us tremendously if wisely and correctly channeled, otherwise it may ruin others and ourselves. A poet says: life can be bad; life can be good; life can be dirty; life can be sad,; life can even be painful. In my mind’s eye, a person can make his life beautiful, meaningful and rewarding and stand out as a respectable personage if he is motivated by a well-orientated ambition.

The publication of college rankings each year would draw increasing attention from interested people. Those people include reporters, college administrators and faculty, alumni, parents, and high school students.Together with other popular guidebooks, college rankings feature data on the overall universities and colleges in China.Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet once stated that “what is in a name? That which we calla rose.By any other name would smell as sweet.”We can ask a similar question over the college rankings:what is in a number?
Some scholars warn that college rankings use objective measures to evaluate subjective considerations so that they can only tell a prospective college student a limited amount. In my opinion,we should take several rankings into consideration to evaluate a specific college’s place in the ranking, instead of only relying on one ranking.
Firstly,to decide whether college rankings give a college a fair shake,it is crucial to look at the methodology of the ranking system. While one system may conclude peer assessment, retention rate, facultyresources, student selectivity, and financial resources, another system may lay its emphasis on the number of famous alumni, the student evaluation of professors and the evaluation of college students.Accordingly, the same university may rank top in one publication of one ranking system, but be reduced to theaverage university category in another ranking system.
Generally speaking, based on the same criteria, the rankings can objectively reflect the strength of a certain university, but it can not tell the whole story ofa college.Besides, many universities are characterized by their unique disciplines.
We can not simply reach conclusion that a music and drama university is worse than a technological university according to their places in the ranking system.
Secondly, college rankings are likely to be manipulated, which inevitably reduces their authority and trustability. As a president from a famous university revealed, one college ranking compiling organizationonce visited him and insinuated that if the president agreed to sponsor their organization, they could put the college in higher places of ranking.
According to some news report, this phenomenon is not rare. Many universities have been invited to “corporate”with some ranking compiling organizations. Can we still believe that college rankings reflect the strength of some universities when some universities sponsor the compiling in exchange of higher places in the ranking?
In a word, college rankings,an important means to evaluate universities, are based on different methodologies. As one methodology only focuses on certain aspects of higher learning,we have to consult with several ranking systems and then we can find out the whole story of a university. We should also be cautious about the manipulation behind the scenes.

As an economic rule goes, when supply outweighsdemand, the price decreases. The same seems truefor the current situation for college graduates. Since1999, the central government has implemented theGrand College Enrollment Plan, with the total numberof college graduates on the increase in the followingyears. But the boomed economy does not provide enough jobs for those graduates coming outat a time. Therefore, many people reason that college graduates are not as competent asbefore for many of them have difficulties in finding jobs. But I disagree with this conclusion.
Firstly, admittedly, there are some college graduates who are not competent, but thesestudents can not represent all the students. Due to the Grand College Enrollment Plan, moreand more high school students have access to the higher education. Inevitably, the standardhas been lowered; otherwise, university can notadmit so many applicants. While those smartstudents in high schools are more likely to have excellent performance, other not-so-goodstudents would have difficulties in college learning. As a result, those graduates with badperformance in college can not demonstrate the value of higher learning to the society andhence they gradually form the incompetent image of college graduates.
Secondly, those who hold this negative opinion do not take the social context intoconsideration. As is known, in the period when China carried out planned economic policies, college graduates did not need to worry about their jobs, for “iron-bowls” waited for them aftergraduation. But after the reform of higher education, college graduates have to find jobs forthemselves. When hundreds of thousands of graduates compete for a limited number of jobvacancies, there are inevitably many who can not procure ideal jobs.
Besides, employment is always influenced by global and national economy. When economyslows down, the corporate world would not recruit as many employees as before. Forexample, in 2009, many college graduates, from both prestigious universities and less-knownuniversities, have difficulties in hunting jobs. In this sense, it is not college graduates that areincompetent, instead, it is the social context that is unfavorable to college graduates.

Heading For the Oscars
Although the grand ceremony of Oscar was over this year, the attention and discussion linger in the Chinese movie community and out. Some insiders hold that following global trends is the only way to develop China’s film industry. Others insist, however, that the Oscars are simply one the many awards that Americans like to crown themselves. Domestic films should maintain their distinct flavors. As a movie fan myself, I think we should strive for it to gain international recognition.
Firstly, the Oscars Award is an international recognition in terms of both artistic performance and box office revenue. With live broadcast in 50 languages, it plays a huge role in shaping the global film industry. It is no wonder that so many people around the world pay much attention to it. The reality is that Hollywood movies account for more than 90 percent of global market shares-this has inevitable worldwide impact. Obviously, the Oscars Award has become something that we can not afford to ignore it.
Moreover, we live in a global, multicultural world where different cultures interact. China’s movie industry needs to realize it and sharpen its competitive edge. If Chinese films are to make a global impact, then movie production, distribution and marketing organization need improving. Chinese films should adjust to satisfy the variety of social demands. The introduction of foreign successful formulas and technology is a must for Chinese film industry. It is parochial to think that China can only use its national characteristics to define domestic movies. Conservatism will hinder the progress of film industry. If China does not develop its film industry through embracing innovative multiculturalism, Chinese movies will have little opportunity to gain a share in the international market.
Last but not least, the Hollywood films also conform to specific cultural demands. Take this year’s Academy Awards as an example, nominated movies include both high-cost productions like The Lord of the Rings and subtle, more moderate budgeted projects like Lost in Translation, these films suggest that Hollywood movies maintain a basic balance in keeping the style of its own and absorbing diverse cultures. Hence, the Chinese filmmakers should spare no efforts to present original domestic films to foreign viewers. We will be left behind if we stick to the so-called orthodox. For instance, Couching Tiger Hidden Dragon was acted by Chinese actors and through cultural icons, but actually its style and structure of the movie all conform to a Hollywood formula. This partly explains why it appeals to a wider range of audiences from different cultural background.
In a word, the Oscars are very important to Chinese filmmakers. Nominations are a kind of approval by international peers of their achievements. As China’s market improves, its movie industry will get stronger and will eventually cash in on the Oscars.

As one famous professor stated,“One can onlyappreciate the beauty of ancient Chinese literaturethroughthe complex Chinese characters.” What theprofessor wants to convey is that complex Chinesecharacters are manifestation of traditional Chineseaesthetics. However, since the foundation of thePRC,China began to adopt simplified Chinesecharacters,so that illiteracy can be more easily eliminated.
Undoubtedly, the introduction of simplified Chinese characters contributes to China’smodernization. Sowhen a member of the national committee of CPPCC proposed that weshould return to Complex Chinese Characters, ongoing debates ensued with vehemence.Personally,it is impractical to return to Complex Chinese Characters, but individuals canvoluntarily make efforts to know Complex Chinese Characters.
Firstly, since the simplified characters have played an indispensable role in people’s lives, wewill have to pay the price if we return to Complex Chinese Characters. To be specific, education administration has to bear the burden of changing textbooks; the corporateworld will have to change their advertisements, contracts and other documents; thegovernment has to change their seals, documents, agreements and treaties with foreignnations. Of course there are other costs resulting from the return to Complex ChineseCharacters. But the question lies in who are willing to bear the costs. In some impoverishedareas, many families can not afford to receive education; when the global economy is reducedto a slow-down,the corporate world is making efforts to cut costs. Therefore,I perceivethe policy of returning to Complex Chinese Characters will trigger oppositions from the public.
Secondly, considering the amount of complex Chinese characters, can all the Chinese learnto recognize them overnight? While students have the time to learn Complex ChineseCharacters, what about people in other domains? The corporate world can not afford tointerrupt their business, government officials and civil servants can not be distracted fromrunning our country, doctors and nurses have to be at work in case that emergency arises,to list three typical domains that will be affected by the policy.
Admittedly, returning to Complex Chinese Characters will help preserve traditional Chineseculture. WhenChina becomes more involved in the world, western cultures, especiallyAmerican culture, have influenced Chinese people at an unprecedented level. Many youngpeople look to learning foreign culture as fashionable. However, the obvious benefits cannot make us embrace the policy with open arms, for we should also bear in mind whether thepolicy is feasible.

China’s economy is not immune to the influence ofthe global economic crisis. As China’s economy isheavily dependent on global trade and investmentflows, the global economic slowdown has alreadyhad a negative impact on China’s export sector andindustries. There are some observations that oureconomy is alreadyslowing down. In response, manyscholars call on Chinese people to spend more money to create domestic demands in variousmagazines and newspapers. They even equal consumption with being patriotic. In my pointofview, we should hold the strings of purse tight, instead of spending more.
Firstly, as even some economic big shots acknowledge that they can not see the bottom ofthe global economic crisis, we should get prepared by holding the strings of our purse tight incase that the crisis lasts longer than anticipated. In terms of traditions, Chinese people haveformed the habit of saving money for long-term consideration. While many foreigners accuseChinese of being conservative, it is time-honored wisdom to save money for emergencies inthe future.
As a matter of fact, many foreign countries are characterized by their advanced welfaresystems, so that they can still make their needs meet in times of crisis. In China, while we admitthat the government has made progress in the establishment of social security systems, there are still many members of our society that are not included in social security systems. Therefore, it is impractical to call on those excluded members of the social security systemsto spend more money.
Secondly, though Chinese people earn more money than before in the aggregate, themajority of us still do not amass enough wealth to live a guaranteed life. According to thelatest release of national incomes, urban citizens earn a per capita income of 15, 781 yuanwhile people in the rural areas earn only 4, 761 yuan. However, we must bear in mind thatwealth amassed by relatively limited number of millionaires and billionaires contribute a largeshare of the per capita income growth. Many people in the rural areas and those laid-off andunemployed workers can not even earn an average income. I think everyone wants to live aluxurious life, but without enough money how can they make it?
To sum up, in a time of economic slowdown, we should hold the strings of our purse tight sothat we can tide ourselves over in case of emergencies. And it is impractical to call on spendingmore when China is still a developing country. As an alternative, I think we can boy cottexports of foreign goods so that we can still create domestic demands.
Living in a world of change, we can not predict whatwill happen in the future. We probably will be reducedto helplessness by unexpected accidents andnatural disasters. It will be greatly appreciated thatmany unknown people will offer helping hands. Asusual, donors’ names and donations are made publicin bulletin board or in other forms by donationproposal initiators. It is believed that the juxtaposition of donors’names and their donationwill make compliments to donors and encourage more people to offer a helping hand. For me, Ithink it is enough to tell the public what donation has been collected by initiators but donors’names and their donation should not be made public.
Firstly, while people consider offering a helping hand, they do not intentionally expect beingrewarded. When the donors’ list is made public, the public will not only be impressed by thebenevolence of the donors, they will also believe that those donors are expecting complimentsfrom both the public and donation receivers. In the case that there are donors who donatemuch more money than average, it is likely that thepublic will accuse those generous donorsof showing off, instead of complimenting their benevolence and generosity. While people donot expect reward for their benevolence, they do not expect accusation, either. Besides, benevolence can not be measured by the amount of donations. The publication of donors’ listmay direct people to think otherwise. Those who donate more money would be regarded morebenevolent than thosewho donate less. Anyway, it is unfair to accuse those who donate dueamount in accord with their purse.
Secondly, the publication of donors’ list may pose potential dangers to donors. Generallyspeaking, people will donate what is reasonable in line with their financial situations. Thosewho rank high in big companies or run their own business usually are expected to donatemore money. However, for many Chinese people, making a name is not a good thing. That iswhy business people always keep silent when asked how much money they have earned. Onereason for their being afraid of making a name is that malicious people will become jealous. Insome extreme cases, criminals may calculate the amount of affordable ransom based on thedonation if they kidnap these wealthy donors.
Finally, what concerns donors most is whether their donations can be timely forwarded tothose in need. Given aforementioned negative impact of donors’ list, it is not necessary tomake a donors’ list.

The publication of college rankings each year woulddraw increasing attention from interestedpeople. Those people include reporters, collegeadministrators and faculty, alumni, parents, andhigh school students.Together with other popularguidebooks, college rankings feature data on theoverall universities and colleges inChina.Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet once stated that “what is in a name? That which wecalla rose.By any other name would smell as sweet.”We can ask a similar question over thecollege rankings:what is in a number?
Some scholars warn that college rankings use objective measures to evaluate subjectiveconsiderations so that they can only tell a prospective college student a limited amount. In myopinion,we should take several rankings into consideration to evaluate a specific college’splace in the ranking, instead of only relying on one ranking.
Firstly,to decide whether college rankings give a college a fair shake,it is crucial to look at themethodology of the ranking system. While one system may conclude peerassessment, retention rate, facultyresources, student selectivity, and financialresources, another system may lay its emphasis on the number of famous alumni, thestudent evaluation of professors and the evaluation of college students.Accordingly, thesame university may rank top in one publication of one ranking system, but be reduced totheaverage university category in another ranking system.Generally speaking, based on thesame criteria, the rankings can objectively reflect the strength of a certain university, but itcan not tell the whole story ofa college.Besides, many universities are characterized by theirunique disciplines. We can not simply reach conclusion that a music and drama university isworse than a technological university according to their places in the ranking system.
Secondly, college rankings are likely to be manipulated, which inevitably reduces theirauthority and trustability. As a president from a famous university revealed, one collegeranking compiling organizationonce visited him and insinuated that if the president agreed tosponsor their organization, they could put the college in higher places of ranking. Accordingto some news report, this phenomenon is not rare. Many universities have been invited to“corporate”with some ranking compiling organizations. Can we still believe that collegerankings reflect the strength of some universities when some universities sponsor thecompiling in exchange of higher places in the ranking?
In a word, college rankings, an important means to evaluate universities, are based ondifferent methodologies. As one methodology only focuses on certain aspects of higherlearning, we have to consult with several ranking systems and then we can find out the wholestory of a university. We should also be cautious about the manipulation behind thescenes.

It is a prevailing practice that university studentsplay network games in their spare time forrelaxation. Some teachers and parents hold thenegative opinion that many students are soobsessed with network gamesthat they playtruant, others even commit a crime for one reason oranother. Others don’t agree. As far as I amconcerned, the critical point is whether the students can keep a balance between study andgames.
Some thought that playing network games will cost a lot of time and energy, which shouldotherwise be devoted to their academic study. After all, time is limited for a college studentand it’s the most fundamental duty for him to study and lay a solid foundation in knowledge. And the content of the network games aresometimes violent and bloody, which is notsuitable for students. It is also reported that some students are so addictive to the networkgames that they even don’t go to class and sit in front of the computers all day long. Theirworries and considerations are justified, but we should not give up eating for choking.
First, life in college is not easy. Students have to work hard to learn and at the same time theyhave much pressure from their parents or others. Playing network games will help them torelax and be immersed in a virtual world. The rest of heart is important in the modern society.
Second, students will learn more about teamwork in the network games. People in a teamcooperate and help each other to win the game. The experience is vivid and works better thanany lecture.
Third, students meet different people on the Internet, and learn to get along with them indifferent ways.It may endow the very student with the ability to establish a better personalrelationship with other people, which means a lot when they enter the society. To sum up, foruniversity students, the priority shouldbe given to academic study. A poor performance inachievement tests won’t make us competitive in the future. But all work no play makes Jack adull boy. Appropriate rest and relaxation in the network games’ world will refresh a personand help him to learn something.
The college students are all adults, they know clearly what they should do and what theyshouldn’t, and have the ability to control their behaviors. So they must strike a balancebetween study and network games, and give due weight to the studies.
Due to the Grand College Enrollment Plan, thenumber of university graduates has been on theincrease since the central government startedimplementing the plan. Though the plan helpsimprove our national quality,it creates pressure forthe job markets. With so many collegestudentscoming out at a time, many graduates havedifficulties in finding suitable jobs. In order to create more jobs, the government encouragescollege graduates to work in villages of 28 provinces and regions with a view that ruraladministration willbe strengthened at the same time. As a result, tens of thousands collegegraduates have been appointed as village officials in the rural areas. It appears that this planhelps alleviate the pressure caused by graduate employment, but I do not think the plan willwork in the long run.
Firstly, after serving as village officials in the rural areas for two years, the majority of thosecollege village officials will start to look for jobs in the job market again, aggravating thepressure of the job market. Some may argue that the number of those village officials whoenter the job market again is balanced by the number of new college graduates who would beappointed as village officials. The truth is that while those students have spent two years in therural areas, they do not gain enough experience in the corporate world and are likely to forgetwhat they have learnt in college. In this sense, they are not guaranteed to find decent jobsagain. Besides, when working in the rural areas, these students with higher degrees arerespected by village people, and are likely to get accustomed to feeling superior to peoplearound them. One can imagine they would probably be frustrated when they work with thosewho hold the same college degrees or even higher degrees.
Secondly, when the supply of college graduates and the demand of our society are unbalanced, the imbalance can be obtained by increasing available jobs or decreasing the supply ofcollege graduates, which means the reduction of college enrollment. Given the fact that theeconomy slows down in the recent, it is difficult to create more jobs. While offering good termsfor graduates such as well-paid salary and residential certificate guarantee, the governmentcan create more jobs in the short term, but does not provide long-term remedy. In this sense, the plan does not solve the fundamental imbalance between the supply and the demand ofcollege graduates.
In sum, the plan to encourage college graduates to work in the rural areas can only provide atemporary remedy for the job market. I think the government should recognize thefundamental imbalance and find the way back toelite education.

Ambition is the decision one makes and the resolution with which he carries out that decision. It provides us with the required driving force to accomplish any undertakings in our life. Just as Joseph Epstein, a famous American writer put it,“And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed.” Indeed, once we make up our minds to choose to do something, then our life becomes meaningful and specifically orientated.

Some people are committed to their dreams andwork hard to achieve their goals. What is guidingthem is akind of illusion. Some people think thatillusion is good for success while others argue thatit is not sogood because it may get peopleunrealistic. As far as I am concerned, illusion isnecessary in our life only if it is encouraging andrealistic.
There are several reasons.First of all, there is power in illusion. The illusion can lead peopleto thepath they want to go on and it gives us passion. We need to live each momentwholeheartedly, with all our senses so that we can find pleasure in the fragrance of backyardgarden, the crayoned picture of a six-year-old, and the enchanting beauty of a rainbow. The illusion can be enthusiastic love of life that puts sparkle in our eyes, a lilt in our stepsand smoothes the wrinkles from our souls.
Secondly, we are born with wide-eyed, enthusiastic wonder as anyone knows who has everseen an infant’s delight at the jingle of keys or the scurrying of a beetle. It is this childlikewonder and illusion that gives enthusiastic people such a youthful air, no matter how oldthey are. For example, the famous cellist Pablo Casals would start his day by playing Bach.As the music flowed through his fingers, his stooped shouldrs would straighten and joywould reappear in his eyes. Music, for him, was an elixir that made life a never-endingadventure. As author and poet Samuel Ullman once wrote, “Years wrinkle the skin, but togive up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.”
Lastly, people with illusions also love what they do, regardless of money or power or title. Ifwe cannot do what we love as a full-time career, we can as do a part-time vocation, likethe head of state who paints, the nun who runs marathons and the executive who handcraftsfurniture. We cannot afford to waste tears and energy and time on “might-have-beens”.We need to turn the tears into sweat as we go after “what-can-be”.
To sum up, God gives each bird its food, but he does not throw it into its nest. Whereveryou want to go, just cherish your precious illusion and let your dream be realized.
